Event Description

About a decade ago, Fred Donner began working on E17861 from the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. The Arabic papyrus, a rare find from the early Muslim period, mentions the name of ʿUmar b. al‐Khattab among other addressees and may constitute one of the earliest Arabic letters known. In this workshop, Donner will read the papyrus with us and discuss some of the puzzling findings he reached through paleographic analysis and radiocarbon dating of this document. Refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees.

Please note that this event is organized by the Arabic Manuscript Reading Group and that at least basic knowledge of Arabic is recommended for attending the event.

In-person attendance is limited to 18 participants and assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis. RSVP here.
